Castle – motte, Carrowcastle, Co. Mayo

Standing prominently on a ridge top at Carrowcastle in County Mayo, this substantial earthwork commands excellent views across the surrounding landscape.

The site consists of a raised oval platform measuring approximately 49 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 35 metres across its width. The platform is defined by sloping scarps that reach over 4 metres high on the western side, though the eastern side is somewhat lower at around 2 metres. Unfortunately, quarrying activity has caused significant damage to the structure; most of the southern third has been deeply excavated, and a 10-metre section of the northwestern scarp has also suffered damage.

The western and northern portions of the interior remain relatively level, whilst the ground gradually slopes downward from the centre towards the eastern entrance, which appears as a distinctive ramp-like depression in the earthwork’s scarp. Running roughly east to west across the interior, north of centre, the faint traces of wall footings are visible as a low grassy ridge, barely 20 centimetres high and less than a metre wide. Around the western perimeter, from the south-southwest to west-northwest, the main scarp drops sharply to a terrace or berm about 4.6 metres wide, with its outer edge defined by another scarp cut into the natural slope of the ridge. Random stones protrude along the top of the western scarp, and the terrace shows signs of deliberate excavation at both ends.

Whilst this earthwork could potentially be classified as a rath, its impressive size, bulk and commanding position suggest it’s more likely a Norman motte or ringwork. This interpretation is strengthened by its proximity to a medieval church just 30 metres to the north-northeast and a possible tower house located 300 metres to the southeast. Together, these structures would have formed an important medieval complex controlling this part of Mayo, combining defensive, religious and residential functions in a strategically chosen location.
