This trapezoidal platform, measuring roughly 28.5 metres north to south and widening from 20 metres at its northern edge to 25 metres at its southern boundary, represents what archaeologists believe to be a medieval moated site. The platform sits slightly elevated above the surrounding landscape, defined by an earthen bank that varies in height from one metre at the north to a more modest rise at the south, with an internal rim still visible despite centuries of weathering.

What makes this site particularly intriguing is the fosse, or defensive ditch, that encircles the platform. Along the northern edge, this ancient waterway reveals itself through a two-metre-wide band of rushes and yellow flag irises; botanical indicators of the persistently damp conditions that would have once filled the entire moat. The southern, southeastern and western portions of the fosse remain visible as rush-filled depressions, though modern field drainage has complicated efforts to determine their original depth and profile. These sections measure between two and three metres wide, with depths of approximately 30 centimetres, though it’s likely they were considerably deeper when first constructed.

Historical mapping tells an evolving story of how this site has been perceived over time. The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map depicts it as a circular embanked enclosure, whilst the later 25-inch plan shows it as trapezoidal, and by 1919 it had been reinterpreted as subrectangular. Inside the platform, faint traces of ridge and furrow cultivation running north to south suggest the site saw agricultural use after its defensive purpose had passed. The location itself was well chosen; good views extend to the south, east and west, whilst rising ground, field boundaries and trees limit visibility to the north, creating a naturally defensible position in the Mayo landscape.
