The moated site at Ballintarton occupies a rectangular plot measuring 19 metres northwest to southeast and 15 metres northeast to southwest, carved into the landscape sometime during the medieval period. A stream runs along its eastern edge, providing what would have been a strategic water source for its original inhabitants.

The site’s defensive features remain remarkably well preserved, offering visitors a chance to trace the outline of what was likely a fortified homestead. Low earthen banks, roughly three metres wide and half a metre high on the interior, define the central rectangular area. These banks are surrounded by flat-bottomed moats, four to five metres wide at their base and still a metre deep despite centuries of silting. An additional outer bank, standing about 80 centimetres high and spanning three to five metres in width, encircles the entire complex on all sides, creating multiple layers of defence that would have deterred unwanted visitors.

First documented by Barry in 1977 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford, this moated site represents one of many such structures scattered across the Irish countryside. These earthworks, typically dating from the 13th to 14th centuries, were often constructed by Anglo-Norman settlers or wealthy Gaelic families seeking to protect their holdings in what was frequently contested territory. Today, the Ballintarton site offers a tangible connection to this period of Irish history, its banks and ditches slowly being reclaimed by the woodland whilst still maintaining their distinctive rectangular footprint in the landscape.
