Castle – motte and bailey, Rathconnell, Co. Westmeath

Rathconnell's motte and bailey castle site in County Westmeath presents a fascinating glimpse into medieval defensive architecture, though today it appears as little more than an impressive earthwork.

The monument consists of a substantial oval mound measuring approximately 44 metres northeast to southwest and 37 metres northwest to southeast, formed by scarping the natural ridge and surrounded by a steep earthen embankment and outer fosse. The flat-topped platform at its summit, spanning 29 by 24 metres, would once have supported wooden fortifications typical of Norman construction methods. A small raised area in the southern quadrant of this platform hints at where the main defensive structures might have stood.

The earthwork shows clear evidence of its defensive design, with a wide fosse visible from the west, north, and east sides, whilst a lower semicircular terrace extends from the southeast to south-southwest, defined by a counterscarp on its downslope. Time and weather have taken their toll; soil creep is particularly evident on the western embankment where the steep sides have begun to slump. The site’s strategic importance is clear from its position, with the ruins of Rathconnell Castle just 65 metres to the northeast and the medieval church and graveyard approximately 85 metres to the southeast.

Later additions tell their own story of the site’s evolution. A circular stone tower, likely dating to the Georgian period, was cut into the northern embankment and served as a dovecote for nearby Rathconnell Court, a Georgian house whose ruins stand just 15 metres to the east. The tower’s lower courses feature defensive loops that may be considerably older than its upper sections, suggesting the Georgians incorporated earlier medieval stonework into their estate buildings. Though marked on Ordnance Survey maps since 1837, the site remains relatively undisturbed in its pastoral setting, offering visitors a chance to trace the layers of Irish history from Norman conquest through to Georgian gentrification.
