This oval earthwork, measuring approximately 62 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 50 metres from north-northwest to south-southeast, was created by modifying the existing ridge into a formidable defensive structure. The flat-topped mound at its centre spans roughly 41.5 metres by 32 metres at the summit, demonstrating the substantial scale of this medieval fortification.

The castle’s defences consist of a steep-sided fosse, or dry moat, that encircles the mound, with an external bank running along its outer edge. This bank, ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 metres in width and standing about 1.5 metres high, would have provided an additional layer of protection against potential attackers. Access to the summit was carefully controlled through a single ramp on the southeast side, which ascends via two bends from the base of the fosse; a design that would have made any assault on the castle particularly challenging.

The proximity of a church just 150 metres to the southwest suggests this was once the centre of a small medieval settlement, typical of Norman colonisation patterns in Ireland during the 12th and 13th centuries. These motte castles served as both military strongholds and administrative centres, allowing the Normans to control and manage their newly acquired territories. Today, this earthwork remains as a testament to the strategic importance of this location and the lasting impact of Norman settlement on the Irish landscape.
