Sitting on nearly level pasture land, the site occupies a strategic position where the ground drops away steeply to the north. What makes this enclosure particularly interesting is its slightly convex western side, a feature that has survived the centuries and remains visible in the landscape today.

Though time has taken its toll on the medieval earthworks, significant portions of the defensive structure remain intact. The earthen bank, standing 1.25 metres high on the interior and 1.4 metres on the exterior, survives along the western and northern sides, now incorporated into the modern field boundary system. The external fosse, or defensive ditch, whilst only 0.1 metres deep today, can still be traced as a gentle slope at the base of the bank. The southern fosse, though no longer visible on the ground, reveals itself as a shadow mark in aerial photographs, demonstrating how modern archaeological techniques can uncover hidden features of these ancient sites.

The enclosure hasn’t existed in isolation; approximately 70 metres to the west lies a circular enclosure, suggesting this area held considerable importance during the medieval period. Industrial development has encroached right up to the northern edge of the site, making its preservation all the more remarkable. First catalogued by Barry in 1981 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, this moated site represents a tangible link to Cork’s medieval past, when such fortified homesteads dotted the Irish countryside.
