This rectangular enclosure, measuring approximately 45 metres east to west and 35 metres north to south, appears on both the 1842 and 1903 Ordnance Survey maps as a distinctive feature with hachured markings indicating its earthen banks. Today, the western and northern boundaries have been incorporated into the modern field fence system, likely preserving elements of the original defensive banks within their structure.

Local memory recalls that the fort remained relatively intact into the 1960s, though decades of ploughing had gradually worn down its once prominent earthen ramparts. When archaeologist Hartnett surveyed the site in 1939, he documented what he described as traces of a rectangular ring fort measuring 180 by 140 feet. At that time, the northern and western sides consisted of what he termed ‘modern’ fences, whilst a slight bank remained visible to the south and a two foot high scarp could still be observed on the eastern side.

Though much diminished from its original form, the site remains an intriguing piece of Cork’s medieval landscape. Visitors to the area today will notice a subtle rise in the ground where the enclosure once stood, and careful observation reveals how the existing field boundaries follow the footprint of this ancient fortification. The site represents one of many such earthworks that once dotted the Irish countryside; defensive structures that served local communities during uncertain times, now reduced to gentle undulations in pastoral fields.
