In the reclaimed pastures of Cloonlogue, County Limerick, a curious earthwork lies 55 metres south of a stream, its origins wrapped in mystery.

The site consists of two conjoined sub-rectangular platforms, one measuring approximately 33 by 27 metres and the other 28 by 31 metres, separated by a fosse or defensive ditch that’s about 4 metres wide and 27 metres long. What makes this feature particularly intriguing is its absence from the 1840 Ordnance Survey map, yet by 1897 it appears clearly marked on the 25-inch OS maps, suggesting either its construction occurred during this 57-year window or it simply went unrecorded in earlier surveys.

The earthwork’s design hints at a medieval moated site, a type of fortified homestead common in Ireland between the 13th and 17th centuries. A water channel or leat at the northeast corner feeds into the moated fosse, which connects via another channel to the stream 100 metres away, creating a sophisticated water management system. The entire monument is outlined by drainage ditches on its southern and eastern sides, features that remain visible on modern satellite imagery from Digital Globe and Google Earth captured between 2011 and 2013.

Whether this is genuinely a medieval defensive structure or simply the product of post-1700 land reclamation works remains uncertain. The systematic water channels and regular platform shapes could equally suggest agricultural improvements from the early modern period, when landowners across Ireland were draining wetlands and reorganising their estates. Without excavation, the true nature and age of this earthwork continues to tantalise local historians and archaeologists alike, standing as a reminder of how much of Ireland’s landscape history remains to be fully understood.
