In the reclaimed pastures of Gorteenatarriff, County Cork, a medieval moated site sits quietly on a south-southeast facing slope, its earthen banks still clearly defining a near-square enclosure after centuries of weathering.

The site measures roughly 40 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 39 metres from west-southwest to east-northeast, surrounded by substantial earthen banks that rise 1.3 metres on the interior and an impressive 1.7 metres on the exterior. A defensive fosse, or ditch, runs around the outside of these banks, reaching depths of 0.8 metres and remaining waterlogged to this day, with its flat bottom preserving the original medieval construction technique.

The enclosure shows signs of both its historical importance and its adaptation to modern farming life. Three original breaks in the earthen bank can be found to the south, west, and at the northeast corner, with the latter two now serving as access points for farm machinery; a practical reminder of how these ancient sites continue to function within the working Irish landscape. Modern field boundaries skirt the fosse on the northwest and north sides, whilst a leat, or artificial watercourse, extends south from the southwest corner across the adjoining field, suggesting a sophisticated water management system that would have served the site’s original inhabitants.

The interior of the enclosure slopes gently down towards the south-southeast, with archaeologists noting a barely perceptible rise at its centre; possibly the remains of structures that once stood within this protected space. First catalogued by Barry in 1981 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, this moated site represents one of many such medieval earthworks scattered across North Cork, each offering tangible evidence of how Anglo-Norman settlers and their descendants shaped the Irish countryside between the 13th and 15th centuries.
