In a pasture at the base of a gently sloping, south-facing hillside near Kilmacow, County Limerick, lies a curious rectangular earthwork that hints at medieval occupation.

The site, positioned immediately west of a farmyard, measures 44 metres from north to south and 46 metres from east to west, with distinctively rounded corners that soften its otherwise geometric shape. What makes this location particularly intriguing is its well-preserved defensive features; a combination of scarped edges, earthen banks, and a fosse that together create a formidable boundary around the interior space.

The enclosure’s defences vary around its perimeter, suggesting different phases of construction or adaptation to the local terrain. From the west around to the north-northeast, a scarped edge rises 0.4 metres externally, whilst the section running from east to southwest features a more substantial earth and stone bank. This bank stands 0.5 metres high on the interior side but presents an impressive 1.5-metre face to anyone approaching from outside. Between the southeast and northeast corners, the defenders added an external fosse, or defensive ditch, measuring 1.1 metres wide and 0.7 metres deep, which would have made unauthorised access considerably more difficult.

Today, the site has been partially absorbed into the agricultural landscape, with the bank from east to southwest incorporated into a modern field boundary that continues westward beyond the enclosure. The interior of the site dips gently towards its centre, possibly indicating centuries of settling or perhaps an original design feature for drainage. This moated site represents one of many such defensive homesteads that dotted the Irish countryside during the medieval period, when local landowners needed protection from both raiders and rivals in an often turbulent political landscape.
