Moated site, Kilcowan Upper, Co. Wexford

First recorded on the 1839 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, this grass-covered site measures approximately 44 by 43 metres and sits at the western edge of a plateau, with the land sloping gently down to a stream about 80 metres away. The defining feature of the site is its water-filled moat, now largely backfilled, which varies in width from 3 to 6 metres and reaches depths of up to 0.6 metres in places.

The moat system creates a distinctive rectangular pattern in the landscape, with the outer edges marked by field banks and hedges that have grown up over the centuries. A farm lane runs along the eastern side of the enclosure, and the total external dimensions of the site, including these boundary features, extend to roughly 65.5 metres north to south and 59 metres east to west. These measurements suggest a fairly typical example of an Anglo-Norman moated site, likely dating from the 13th or 14th century when such fortified farmsteads were common across the fertile lands of south Leinster.

Today, the site appears as little more than a series of gentle depressions and raised areas in the pasture, but its rectangular form remains clearly visible to the trained eye. Like many of Wexford’s medieval earthworks, this moated site represents the agricultural expansion and settlement patterns of the Anglo-Normans, who established these defended homesteads throughout the county’s rich farmlands. The site was documented by Barry in 1977 and later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford, ensuring its recognition as part of Ireland’s medieval heritage.
