The structure follows the typical design of Irish tower houses; a rectangular stone building rising several storeys high with thick walls and narrow windows. These architectural features weren’t merely decorative but served practical purposes: the small windows made the castle difficult to attack, whilst the height allowed defenders to spot approaching threats from miles away. Inside, the castle would have contained multiple floors connected by a spiral staircase, with the ground floor often used for storage, the middle floors for living quarters, and the top floor reserved for the lord’s private chambers.

Today, Castle, Barrabehy stands as a silent witness to centuries of Irish history. Like many of Ireland’s estimated 3,000 tower houses, it has weathered political upheavals, changing ownership, and the passage of time.
