Visitors entering through its impressive segmentally arched opening, which rises 4.5 metres high, would have immediately encountered a portcullis groove; a defensive feature that speaks to the building’s military purpose. Beyond this, a 2 metre wide passage leads to a pointed doorway, whilst a spiral staircase accessed through an opening on the western side provides vertical circulation throughout the tower.

The first floor reveals the building’s defensive capabilities with a cruciform gun loop built into the north wall, its splayed design allowing defenders a wider field of fire whilst presenting a minimal target to attackers. The western portion of this level houses the continuation of the spiral staircase, whilst the eastern section contains a substantial chamber equipped with two garderobes set into the northern wall. The eastern wall, which may be a later addition, features a large splayed rectangular window, and the southern wall contains a splayed doorway connecting to the central range of the complex.

The upper floors continue this blend of residential and defensive architecture. The second floor features another splayed loop facing northwest and maintains access to the main building through a doorway in the south wall. The principal chamber at this level includes a rectangular recess in the north wall and a window in the east wall. Above the second floor, an external string course marks where the battlements would have begun. The third floor takes on a distinctive rounded form in its northwest corner, housing a tower with stairs that connect to the northwest tower via a doorway in the western wall, creating an interconnected defensive system that would have allowed defenders to move quickly between strategic positions.
