On a limestone outcrop in County Clare's mixed woodland stands the remnants of Dangan Iviggin, a 14th-century hall-house and its associated bawn wall.

This defensive enclosure creates a subrectangular area of roughly 1,500 square metres to the east of the hall-house, complete with a small rectangular projection to the south. The structure represents a fascinating example of medieval Irish fortification, with the original hall-house incorporated directly into the western side of the bawn’s defensive perimeter.

The bawn wall itself is an impressive feat of drystone construction, built from random rubble without mortar. Measuring 34 metres on the north side, 39 metres to the east, 41 metres along the south, and 25 metres on the west where it meets the hall-house, the wall reaches up to 1.2 metres in width and stands as high as 2.5 metres in places. Two particularly interesting features enhance this defensive structure: a circular mural tower at the northwest angle and a banqueting hall tucked into the southeast corner. The mural tower, measuring 4.5 metres in diameter with walls 0.9 metres thick, rises to 3.8 metres despite partial collapse on its southeastern arc. Its ground floor contains seven splayed embrasures with oval loops for defence, whilst the first floor likely held six additional loops, though time has taken its toll on the upper portions.

The banqueting hall presents an intriguing architectural puzzle, occupying a rectangular space measuring 8.5 by 16.5 metres. Its construction differs notably from the main bawn wall, featuring a substantial double-height wall to the west and north with evidence of a steeply pitched roof that once connected to an adjoining building, now lost. The interior reveals a complex arrangement of openings: window opes and door openings of varying sizes, including a particularly fine double-height, round-headed doorway at the eastern end with expertly dressed jambstones and an arch of finely cut voussoirs. Put-log holes visible in the interior walls hint at the construction methods used, whilst the sloping wall top suggests later modifications, possibly including a lean-to roof structure added well after the castle’s initial construction. Today, ivy encroaches on most elevations and trees grow within the ruins, but the site remains clearly depicted on historic Ordnance Survey maps, preserving its layout for future generations to study.
