At the northwest corner of Inchicronan Lough in County Clare, a low-lying peninsula holds the remains of a forgotten bawn that somehow escaped official archaeological listings until recently.

The overgrown stone enclosure, measuring 72 metres north-northeast to south-southwest and 25 metres west-northwest to east-southeast, still stands as an impressive testament to medieval defensive architecture. Its walls, built from uncoursed limestone with an external batter, reach up to 3.6 metres in height at the northwest corner and maintain a width of 1.4 metres throughout.

The bawn’s most intriguing feature is its destroyed gateway on the western side’s northern end, where the three-metre-wide entrance still shows the base of inturned walls extending six metres on each side. A draw-bar socket, measuring 1.2 metres long, remains visible on the northeast side of the gateway; a practical reminder of how these structures were once secured against unwanted visitors. While the original castle that this bawn once protected has vanished without a trace, leaving no clear archaeological evidence behind, the enclosure itself has been repurposed over the centuries.

Later generations found new uses for this medieval defensive space, constructing various buildings within its protective walls. The foundations of a rectangular structure, with internal dimensions of 11 metres northwest to southeast and 5.5 metres northeast to southwest, sit against the northwest wall of the bawn. At the centre of the enclosure, a lime kiln speaks to the site’s industrial reuse, likely during the 18th or 19th century when such kilns were essential for agricultural improvement and building work across rural Ireland.
