In the townland of Cahernalee, County Galway, the remains of a rectangular bawn tell the story of Ireland's turbulent past.

Bawn, Cahernalee, Co. Galway

This defensive enclosure, measuring 30.2 metres from north to south and 22.3 metres from east to west, once served as the protective outer wall for a tower house that still occupies its northern half. The bawn survives today as a grassed mound, with sections of both internal and external stone revetment still visible at various points around its perimeter.

The structure is best preserved along its southern side, where the wall stands approximately 1.15 metres wide, with an internal height of 0.5 metres and an external height reaching 0.9 metres. Time and nature have taken their toll on other sections; hawthorn trees now grow along the western side, whilst large limestone blocks and chunks of mortared stone lie scattered about the northern end of the interior. A stone-lined pit, likely once serving a practical purpose for the tower house’s inhabitants, can still be seen at the northeast corner.

Though several breaches have opened in the walls over the centuries, making it impossible to identify the original entrance, the bawn remains an evocative reminder of the defensive architecture that once dotted the Irish landscape. These fortified enclosures, typically built between the 15th and 17th centuries, provided essential protection for the families who lived in the associated tower houses, offering a secure space for livestock and serving as a first line of defence against raiders and rival clans.
