Bawn, Fiddaun, Co. Galway
This six-sided fortification, measuring roughly 41 metres north-northeast to south-southwest and 26 metres west-northwest to east-southeast, forms a rectangular enclosure with one distinctive feature: a V-shaped projection jutting from its southern wall. Built to protect the central tower house, this inner bawn once formed part of a larger defensive complex, though only traces of the outer bawn remain today.
The western wall houses the main entrance through a two-storey gatehouse, complete with a pointed arch doorway and a guardroom immediately to the south. This gatehouse was clearly built with defence in mind; musket loops pierce the walls at strategic points, covering both the entrance and the approaches along the western wall. Above, accessed by steps leading to the wall-walk, a machicolation allowed defenders to drop projectiles on anyone attempting to force entry below. The entire circuit of walls retains its wall-walk, punctuated by musket loops and featuring an angle bartizan at the northeast corner. The V-shaped southern projection bristles with four embrasures for muskets, their downward angles designed to eliminate any blind spots at the base of the walls.
Evidence of domestic life within the bawn survives in the form of several buildings constructed against the interior walls. The outline of one structure’s gable ends can still be seen against the western end of the south wall, complete with its original fireplace and chimney. Another building, not bonded to the bawn wall itself, was erected against the eastern wall; its remains include north and south walls, an internal partition, and a fireplace with a blocked window in the north wall. A small garderobe near the eastern end of the south wall and various other architectural fragments suggest this fortification served not just as a defensive stronghold but as a living space for its inhabitants, combining military practicality with the necessities of daily life in turbulent times.
