The main structure consists of a long rectangular building that, despite its weathered state, still rises two storeys from its original three. At its southeast corner, a garderobe tower provided essential facilities for the castle’s inhabitants, whilst the southwest corner once boasted another tower, now lost to time. The building’s unusual design places it at an interesting crossroads in Irish castle architecture, combining elements of both the traditional tower house and the later fortified house styles that would become more common in the post-medieval period.

The castle sits within a circular bawn wall, measuring approximately 50 metres from north to south, which would have provided the first line of defence for those within. Built from roughly coursed limestone rubble, this protective wall stands best preserved on its southern side, reaching heights of around two metres with a thickness of 0.8 metres. The northern section has been incorporated into the modern field boundary, whilst only the foundation stones remain visible at the northwestern and northeastern sections. A curious detail survives halfway up the internal face of the wall; an offset that likely supported a wooden platform, allowing defenders to patrol the perimeter and keep watch over the surrounding countryside.

Evidence suggests the defences extended beyond the bawn wall itself. Traces of what appears to be an infilled fosse, or defensive ditch, can be detected around the base of the bawn, adding another layer of protection against potential attackers. At the southwest, a three-metre gap in this ditch likely marks the location of a causeway that served as the original entrance to the complex. Though time and weather have taken their toll on these remains, they offer valuable insights into how Irish castles adapted and evolved during a period of significant social and military change, bridging the gap between medieval and early modern fortification techniques.
