On the southern side of Derrymore Island in Lough Gara, County Sligo, lies a fascinating medieval moated site that tells the story of Anglo-Norman settlement in the west of Ireland.

This rectangular earthwork, measuring 27 metres north to south and 43.5 metres east to west, sits in pasture land where the ground breaks into a wooded slope leading down to the lakeshore. The site is defined by an earthen bank on three sides; roughly 2.4 metres wide and standing less than half a metre high, whilst the southern boundary is marked by a scarp that merges with the natural slope dropping 3.5 metres to the water’s edge.

The enclosure shows several intriguing features that hint at its former use. Along the northern bank, there’s a small rectangular projection extending outward, possibly the remains of a gatehouse or defensive structure. Three breaks in the earthwork at the west, north and northeast likely mark original entrances, with the largest western opening spanning nearly 6 metres. Just outside the eastern bank, a shallow wet depression marked by rushes may be the remnant of the original moat that once surrounded this defensive site. The interior slopes gently from centre to south and is now partially covered with native Irish hedgerow species; hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel bushes have colonised much of the eastern third and the perimeter.

This type of moated site typically dates from the 13th to 14th centuries when Anglo-Norman settlers established defended homesteads across Ireland. The presence of a circular enclosure just 50 metres to the northeast suggests this area saw continuous occupation across different periods. Today, a modern field boundary crosses the interior from north to south, but the earthworks remain clearly visible, offering visitors a tangible connection to Ireland’s complex medieval past when cultures collided and new settlement patterns emerged across the landscape.
