This rectangular earthwork sits quietly in its pasture setting, measuring roughly 30.5 metres from east to west and 14.7 metres from north to south. The site appears on historical Ordnance Survey maps dating back to 1842, marked as a rectangular enclosure that remained significant enough to be documented again in 1904 and 1938.

The earthwork itself consists of an earthen bank that rises about half a metre on the inside and a full metre on the exterior. Three sides; east, south, and west; feature an external fosse, or defensive ditch, that drops down 1.3 metres, whilst the northern side presents a more dramatic scarp reaching 1.6 metres in height. Today, heavy vegetation has claimed much of the bank and interior, making it somewhat challenging to fully appreciate the site’s original form.

This type of enclosed settlement, often referred to as a ringfort or rath in Irish archaeology, represents one of the most common monument types found across the Irish landscape. The name ‘Lios Fada’, recorded by Broker in 1937, translates roughly to ‘long fort’ in Irish, though the site’s rectangular shape sets it apart from the more typical circular ringforts found throughout Cork. These earthworks likely served as defended farmsteads during the early medieval period, providing both protection and status to their inhabitants whilst managing the surrounding agricultural lands.
