On the floodplain of the River Slaney in Kilgibbon, County Wexford, lies a curious square earthwork that hints at medieval life in this corner of Ireland.

The site appears as a grass-covered platform measuring 24 metres on each side, surrounded by what were once water-filled moats. These defensive ditches, now silted up, are most prominent on the western side where they stretch 10 metres wide and still retain a depth of about 60 centimetres. The southern and western edges feature outer banks that rise half a metre above the surrounding landscape, adding an extra layer of fortification to this ancient stronghold.

The site’s strategic placement about 150 metres west of the River Slaney would have provided both protection and access to water, essential elements for any medieval settlement. A causeway at the northwest corner, roughly 5 metres wide, marks the original entrance to the enclosure, whilst remnants of a dried-up leat entering from the same direction suggest a sophisticated water management system that once fed the moats. This type of moated site typically dates from the 13th to 14th centuries, when Anglo-Norman settlers established fortified farmsteads throughout the Irish countryside.

What makes this particular site intriguing is its fleeting appearance in historical records; it shows up as a faint rectangular feature on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map but seems to have been overlooked or dismissed in subsequent surveys. Today, visitors to the area might easily miss this subtle earthwork, yet it represents centuries of human occupation and adaptation to the Wexford landscape. The Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford, compiled by Michael Moore and updated in 2012, provides the most comprehensive documentation of this overlooked piece of Ireland’s medieval heritage.
