Moated site, Grillagh, Co. Limerick

This moated site, sitting 55 metres north of the Ballydaheen townland boundary, reveals itself through cropmarks; subtle variations in vegetation growth that trace the foundations of a medieval settlement long since vanished from the surface. The site measures roughly 40 metres northwest to southeast and 41 metres in the perpendicular direction, forming a neat rectangle that would have once enclosed a fortified homestead.

The discovery of this hidden monument came about through aerial photography during the Bruff survey in 1986, when archaeologists spotted the distinctive rectangular pattern from above. While invisible at ground level amongst the land drains and watercourses that now cross the pasture, the site shows up clearly in aerial images, particularly in orthoimagery captured between 2005 and 2016. These cropmarks occur because the buried ditches and foundations affect how crops and grass grow above them, creating ghostly outlines that betray the presence of archaeological features beneath.

Medieval moated sites like this one were typically built by Anglo-Norman settlers or wealthy Irish families between the 13th and 17th centuries. They consisted of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled moat, which provided both defence and drainage in Ireland’s damp climate. The platform would have supported a timber hall or tower house, along with various outbuildings for livestock and storage. Today, with a bullaun stone lying 270 metres to the east serving as another reminder of the area’s long history, this cropmark stands as a faint echo of medieval life in rural Limerick, visible only from the air or in the right light.
