These earthen remains are associated with Bracklin Castle, a tower house that still stands, and the site of a now-destroyed church. The earthworks, though somewhat irregular in their layout, reveal the ghost of the castle’s bawn; a defensive wall that once protected the tower house. On the western side of the castle, the outline of this rectangular enclosure can still be traced, whilst a distinctive earthwork running northeast to southeast on the castle’s eastern side may mark an old roadway that once connected this settlement to the wider world.

The castle sits at the eastern end of what appears to have been a roughly rectangular enclosure. Along the northern edge, a low scarp defines the boundary, which transforms into a low bank as it curves around the northwestern and western sides. This earthen bank continues, albeit irregularly, along the southern and eastern perimeters. Outside this defensive circuit, a shallow fosse, or ditch, can be detected on the eastern, southern, and western sides; a common defensive feature that would have made the castle harder to approach. When surveyed in 1977, archaeologists noted low mounds of stones to the west of the castle, suggesting that substantial structures once stood here, now reduced to rubble beneath the grass.

Today, these earthworks exist as subtle undulations in the landscape, their forms softened by centuries of weathering and agricultural use. The boggy nature of the ground has likely helped preserve these features, as the wet conditions discourage deep ploughing that might otherwise have erased them entirely. Together with the standing remains of the tower house, they offer a tangible connection to medieval Offaly, when such fortified homesteads dotted the Irish midlands, serving as both defensive structures and symbols of authority in a contested landscape.
