Castle, Carrickaneady, Co. Mayo

Built sometime between the 15th and 16th centuries, the fortification was likely constructed by local Gaelic lords who understood the importance of controlling this particular stretch of countryside. The castle’s position would have given its occupants clear views across the surrounding landscape, allowing them to monitor movement along ancient routes and maintain authority over the local population.

The structure itself follows the typical design of Irish tower houses from this period; a rectangular stone fortress built for both defence and domestic life. These buildings served as fortified homes for the ruling families, combining living quarters with military features like narrow windows for archers, thick walls to withstand siege, and elevated positions that made direct assault difficult. While many such castles were abandoned after Cromwell’s campaign through Ireland in the 1650s, their ruins continue to mark places of former power and influence across the Irish countryside.

Today, the castle at Carrickaneady stands as one of thousands of similar ruins scattered throughout Ireland, each one a reminder of the complex territorial divisions that once defined the island. Archaeological evidence suggests the site may have been important even before the castle’s construction, with the Irish place name ‘Carrickaneady’ potentially deriving from ‘Carraig an Fhéidh’, meaning ‘rock of the wood’ or possibly referencing deer, indicating the area’s long history of human significance. Visitors to the site can still trace the outline of the original structure and imagine how life unfolded within these walls during Mayo’s turbulent medieval period.
