The ruins of Roscore Castle in County Offaly offer a glimpse into 17th-century Irish fortified architecture, though today only fragments of its former structure remain.

The most prominent surviving feature is the south gable wall, which rises to approximately 35 feet, along with portions of the western wall that stand about 5 feet high. A defensive tower projects from the southwest corner, extending 3 feet 6 inches from both the south and west walls, with a southern wall measuring 13 feet 6 inches in length. The castle’s defensive capabilities are evident in the ground floor loopholes; narrow slits just 2 inches wide and roughly 1 foot 5 inches high that allowed defenders to fire upon attackers whilst remaining protected.

The construction techniques reveal interesting details about the building methods of the period. The gable wall was built using rough stones, plastered smooth on the interior and finished with roughcast on the exterior. Small rectangular windows punctuate the walls, their wooden frames long since gone but leaving telltale impressions in the roughcast. These windows featured wooden lintels on the outside and brick on the inside, with two such openings visible in the south wall at both ground and first floor levels. The castle’s original footprint extended over 33 feet in length, though the eastern and northern walls have been entirely removed save for a corner that was incorporated into a more modern house built on the site.

Historical records suggest this is the structure marked as ‘Roscore House in Ruins’ on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map, and field walls to the east of the castle may represent traces of a bawn, the defensive courtyard typical of Irish tower houses. Archaeological surveys conducted by Davies in 1942 provided much of our current understanding of the site, though the ruins are no longer visible at ground level. The surviving walls, measuring 2 feet 7 inches thick, speak to the substantial nature of these frontier fortifications that once dotted the Irish landscape during a turbulent period of the country’s history.
