Castle, Leitrim South, Co. Sligo

In an undulating meadow in Leitrim South, County Sligo, local tradition points to a curious rectangular area as the site of an old castle.

The space, measuring roughly 37 metres east to west and 50 metres north to south, is naturally defined by limestone scarps rising between one and one and a half metres high on three sides. This could be one of the ‘two old castles’ mentioned in historical records from 1836. Atop the western and northern scarps, you can still trace the footings of old walls; sod-covered stone foundations about 70 centimetres wide and 30 centimetres high, built from large stones up to a metre in length. In places along the western side, two courses of this ancient stonework remain visible.

The interior tells its own story of decay and time. Whilst the northern half remains relatively level, the ground slopes away towards the south, eventually merging with the surrounding field. Outside the eastern edge, disturbed ground and mounds of angular stones mark what might be the remains of a rectangular structure once known locally as ‘the stables’. This building, first documented in 1991, supposedly measured 20 metres by 4.5 metres and was divided into four rooms by internal walls. A solitary section of mortared wall still stands sentinel near the southeast corner; two metres tall and 65 centimetres thick, it bears traces of rendering on its eastern face and features a curious circular opening at its centre.

The immediate area hints at further lost structures. Just east of the standing wall, rubble-strewn ground suggests another collapsed rectangular building, whilst to the south, a second rectangular depression cut into the slope may mark yet another vanished structure. About 50 metres southeast, a rath, one of Ireland’s ubiquitous ringforts, completes this quietly evocative archaeological landscape. Whether this really was one of the castles mentioned in the 19th-century records or simply the remains of later agricultural buildings, the site continues to intrigue locals and archaeologists alike.
