Moated site, Drumcliff South, Co. Sligo

Sitting on the south bank of the Drumcliff River in County Sligo, this moated site occupies a patch of low-lying wet pasture that has likely remained unchanged for centuries.

The site forms a rough D-shape, measuring approximately 45 metres from northwest to southeast and 30 metres from northeast to southwest. An earthen scarp rises to about 85 centimetres high around much of the perimeter, with a waterlogged fosse, or defensive ditch, running along its outer edge. This fosse stretches 11.4 metres wide and reaches depths of 65 centimetres, its broad, flat-bottomed profile now permanently filled with water.

The site’s boundaries tell an interesting story of both human construction and natural features. Whilst the southeastern to northwestern sides are defined by the purposefully built scarp and fosse, the remaining perimeter makes clever use of the landscape. The Drumcliff River forms a straight edge running northwest to southeast, whilst a field drain creates another straight boundary from northeast to southwest. Together, these create a naturally defensible position that required less earthwork construction than a fully enclosed site.

The interior reveals intriguing divisions that hint at how this space was once organised. A fosse-like depression runs northeast to southwest through the centre, measuring 20 metres long, between 4 and 6 metres wide, and 45 centimetres deep, effectively splitting the interior into two sections. In the northeastern portion, where the river meets the drain, sits a slightly raised rectangular platform measuring 17 by 15 metres, defined by an irregular scarp about 30 centimetres high. This raised area may have supported structures or served a specific purpose within the moated complex, though the original entrance to the site can no longer be identified.
