Castle, Rathvilly, Co. Carlow

The site consists of a roughly rectangular earthen platform measuring about 50 metres north to south and 40 metres east to west, with the northern end rising to approximately 1.5 metres in height whilst the southern portion stands at just half a metre. A slight depression at the base of the northern section suggests the original defensive layout, and archaeological evidence indicates the castle may have been positioned within an oval enclosure, typical of Anglo-Norman fortifications in Ireland.

The castle’s history stretches back to the Anglo-Norman period, when it was reportedly constructed by Hugh de Lacy, one of the most powerful lords in medieval Ireland. Historical records show the fortress was significant enough to warrant mention in a 1347 grant from King Edward III to the Duke of Norfolk, indicating its strategic importance in controlling this part of Leinster. The structure endured through centuries of conflict and change, suffering severe damage during the Cromwellian conquest around 1650, a turbulent period that saw the destruction of many Irish castles and fortifications.

Rather remarkably, the castle was rebuilt following its near destruction and continued to serve as a residence well into the Georgian period, with occupation lasting until approximately 1736. This longevity speaks to both the site’s strategic value and its adaptation to changing times; from medieval fortress to early modern manor house. Today, whilst only the earthwork platform remains visible, the site represents nearly 600 years of continuous use, making it a fascinating example of how Ireland’s medieval landscapes evolved through conquest, rebellion, and eventual abandonment.
