No earthwork rises from the grass, no ditch catches the light at dusk, no ring of stones breaks the surface. The site exists, for the ordinary visitor, only as an absence, a roughly oval patch of improved pasture where something once stood or was deliberately bounded, measuring approximately twenty metres by fifteen.

What we know of it comes largely from cartographic evidence. The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, part of the first systematic large-scale mapping of Ireland, recorded the enclosure at a time when it was presumably still legible in the landscape. Enclosures of this kind are a broad category in Irish archaeology, ranging from prehistoric farmsteads to early medieval ringforts, the latter being circular or oval earthen banks that once enclosed a dwelling and offered a degree of protection and status to those who built them. Whether the Kilpoole example belongs to any of those traditions is not recorded. The east-facing slope it occupies is a detail that would have mattered to whoever chose the site, offering morning light and some shelter, but beyond that the ground holds its silence. Subsequent improvement of the pasture, the kind of deep ploughing and drainage that transformed so much of the Irish countryside across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, has levelled whatever remained above ground.
