The Church of Ireland parish church at Kilmacrenan in County Donegal offers more than Sunday services; its walls serve as an outdoor museum of medieval stonework.

Built between 1840 and 1846, the church incorporates five dressed stone fragments that tell a story of religious continuity and architectural recycling in rural Ireland. These carved pieces, carefully set into the church’s exterior walls, likely originated from the nearby Franciscan friary, creating a tangible link between the Protestant present and the Catholic past.

The most intriguing pieces are found in the north wall of the vestry, where two hood-mould stops display delicate vine-leaf enrichments, though their tapering ends have been broken away by time. Below the east window, visitors can spot a small sandstone panel, measuring 25 centimetres square, decorated with an intricate pattern of four diagonal stalks that criss-cross symmetrically, with stylised leaf terminals filling the spaces between them, all carved in false relief. This particular fragment showcases the skilled craftsmanship of medieval stone carvers who once worked in the region.

Above the windows in the east walls of both the porch and vestry, two curious piscina-like stones catch the eye. The porch features an eight-fluted carved stone with a central hole, whilst the vestry displays a simpler four-fluted version in the corresponding position, both set just below the eaves. These architectural fragments, documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, transform an otherwise modest Victorian church into a repository of medieval artistry, preserving elements that might otherwise have been lost to weather and neglect.
