Barrow - bowl-barrow, Rahan Near, Co. Donegal
The monument consists of a circular earthen mound, roughly 19 metres across at its widest point, with the raised central portion measuring about 8.5 metres in diameter and standing between 1 and 1.7 metres high. The entire structure spans approximately 13.5 metres at its base, creating a distinctive round-topped profile that would have been visible for miles when first constructed.
The barrow is remarkably well preserved, particularly its surrounding fosse; a waterlogged defensive ditch that encircles the mound. This ancient water feature varies between 1 and 2 metres wide at its base, expanding to 2.5 to 3.5 metres at the top, with depths ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 metres. Beyond the fosse, traces of an external earthen bank can still be detected, though this outer defence is less well preserved than the rest of the monument, measuring about 2 metres wide and only 0.2 metres in height.
Curiously, despite its size and prominence at 217 feet above sea level, this archaeological feature never appeared as an antiquity on any edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps. Instead, the location was simply marked with a triangulation station noting the spot height. This oversight seems particularly odd given the monument’s substantial dimensions and its commanding position on Sentry Hill, where it has stood sentinel over the surrounding landscape for thousands of years.
