Atop a dramatic limestone outcrop in County Clare stands an impressive fortified enclosure that once protected a tower house in its southwestern corner.

Bawn, Ballynalackan, Co. Clare

This large bawn, measuring approximately 130 metres from east to west and 33 metres from north to south, occupies the entire flat summit of the steep-sided rock formation, surrounded by rolling pasture and woodland. The defensive walls, roughly 1.5 metres thick, follow the natural contours of the outcrop, with the northern and eastern sections built right to the edge of cliffs that drop between 15 and 30 metres to the ground below.

The western entrance to the bawn features a later addition; a pointed arch gateway that, whilst not original to the structure, boasts sophisticated defensive features including four double corbels that once supported a machicolation (a projecting gallery with openings for dropping materials on attackers below). The gateway’s southern interior preserves a stone door-eye and substantial bolt recess, whilst steps to the north lead up to the wall walk where four embrasures allowed defenders to rain shot upon anyone approaching the entrance. At the northeastern corner, a square turret remains intact, and according to late 19th-century accounts by antiquarian Westropp, this corner once featured the corbelled pier of a postern gate, providing a secondary, more discreet entrance.

Inside the bawn, a curious line of large boulders, some measuring up to four metres in length, runs for about 25 metres along the north and east sides of the tower house. These may have formed an inner defensive wall, creating a second line of defence within the main enclosure. The site has been documented on Ordnance Survey maps since 1842, and whilst it saw an unusual transformation into a clay pigeon shooting range by 1998, the structure remains remarkably well-preserved, with its level interior maintained as a lawn and the stone defences largely intact despite centuries of exposure to the elements.
