Sitting on an east-facing slope in County Waterford, the castle of Ballykeeroge tells a story of changing fortunes through Irish history.

The castle was granted to Sir Nicholas Walshe in 1587, during the Tudor period when English authority was extending its reach across Ireland through land grants to loyal subjects.

By the mid-17th century, the site had grown into a substantial estate. The Civil Survey of around 1655 recorded it as a ruined castle accompanied by a large bawn, which would have been a fortified courtyard typical of Irish castle complexes. The survey also noted an orchard, a pigeon house, and several cabins, painting a picture of a once-thriving manor that combined defensive architecture with agricultural productivity. The pigeon house, or dovecote, would have provided both meat and valuable fertiliser for the estate’s crops.

Today, whilst the castle ruins remain, the bawn that once protected the complex has vanished entirely, leaving no trace of the defensive walls that would have enclosed the castle’s courtyard. This loss of the bawn is common across Ireland, where these structures were often robbed for building stone once their defensive purpose became obsolete. The site stands as a reminder of how Ireland’s castle landscapes have been transformed over the centuries, with some elements surviving whilst others disappear completely from the archaeological record.
