On a gentle slope overlooking the River Boyne in County Kildare, locals still point to an empty patch of pasture where Clonkeen Castle once stood.

Though no stones remain visible today, this unremarkable spot carries centuries of history. In April 1569, the English crown granted Captain Henry Colley permission to rebuild here, with specific instructions to construct both a castle and a fortified bawn from stone. The original medieval structure had likely fallen into disrepair during the tumultuous years of the Tudor conquest of Ireland.

The castle appears to have served its purpose for nearly two centuries. A 1744 map shows it still occupied and presumably in reasonable condition, suggesting it weathered the upheavals of the Cromwellian period and the Williamite Wars. However, by the time John Taylor created his comprehensive map of County Kildare in 1783, the castle had vanished from the cartographic record. This disappearance likely occurred during the relatively peaceful mid-18th century, when many Irish tower houses and castles were either abandoned for more comfortable Georgian mansions or dismantled for building materials.

By 1837, when the Ordnance Survey Letters were compiled, only local memory preserved the castle’s location. The surveyors noted that residents could still identify where the old castle had stood, though nothing remained above ground. Today, approximately 25 metres north of the River Boyne and 190 metres west of River Bridge, this quiet field continues to hold its secret; a reminder that not all historical sites announce themselves with dramatic ruins or romantic towers.
