Historical records from the early 20th century describe a northern wall that once stood near the river, complete with a vaulted ground floor and an associated bawn, or fortified enclosure. An 18th century drawing published in the Groses’s Antiquities of Ireland shows the castle in better condition, with the north wall rising three storeys high and featuring a distinctive polygonal angle tower on the northwest corner, along with partial remains of the bawn walls extending to the west and north.
Today, the castle is largely reduced to a pile of rubble, though archaeological investigations in 2005 revealed that portions of the original structure survive beneath the debris. Test excavations uncovered an intact section of the northern wall, standing up to 2.4 metres high and extending approximately 6 metres east to west, albeit with a breach in its centre. The original floor of the tower house was also identified as a distinctive rectangular area of light, sandy gravel. Unfortunately, the west, south and east walls appear to have been demolished in recent years, as evidenced by modern plastic found beneath the rubble during excavations.
The surrounding landscape still bears traces of the castle’s former defensive features and formal layout. A series of low earthworks form what appears to be the remains of the bawn enclosure to the north and east of the tower house, constructed from gravel and stone banks with a possible entrance opening to the north. Aerial photographs from 2005 also reveal earthworks suggesting formal gardens or a walled garden to the north and south of the castle, with a roadway visible to the west. Archaeological finds from the site, including animal bones and pottery sherds, date the castle’s period of use from the 16th to mid 17th century, offering tangible connections to the families who once called this fortified residence home.
