In the townland of Dysart, County Laois, the remnants of a rectangular enclosure appear on the first Ordnance Survey six-inch map from 1841, marking what was once a significant defensive structure.

Though no visible traces remain above ground today, the site’s footprint reveals a rectangular enclosure measuring approximately 50 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west. Archaeological surveys indicate that an internal wall once divided the space, running from east-north-east to west-north-west, suggesting the compound served multiple functions or underwent modifications during its period of use.

The enclosure sits intriguingly close to Pigott’s Castle, which lies along the same alignment to the west-north-west. This spatial relationship hints at a broader defensive landscape in medieval Dysart, where multiple fortified structures may have worked in concert to control the surrounding territory. The term ‘bawn’ typically refers to a fortified enclosure built to protect a house or castle, often constructed during the plantation period of the 16th and 17th centuries when English and Scottish settlers required defensive compounds in rural Ireland.

While the physical structure has vanished from the landscape, its documentation in the Archaeological Inventory of County Laois preserves its place in the historical record. The inventory, compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock, and Bernie Moran in 1995, represents a comprehensive effort to catalogue and protect Ireland’s archaeological heritage, ensuring that sites like this Dysart bawn remain part of the collective memory even after the stones themselves have disappeared.
