West of the Gully River in County Laois stands a remarkable five-storey tower house that offers a glimpse into Ireland's turbulent medieval past.

The tower at Gortnaclea rises from an elevated position, commanding views across the surrounding landscape; a strategic location that would have been carefully chosen by its original builders. While the main structure remains largely intact, keen observers can still trace the ghostly outline of a bawn wall that once extended to the north and west of the tower, marking where defensive fortifications once protected the inhabitants and their livestock.

Tower houses like this one were the preferred residences of Gaelic and Anglo-Norman lords from the 15th to the 17th centuries, serving as both family homes and defensive strongholds. The bawn, essentially a fortified courtyard wall, would have enclosed an area around the tower where cattle could be secured during raids and where daily activities of the household took place. Though time and weather have reduced much of Gortnaclea’s bawn to mere traces in the earth, these remnants help archaeologists and historians piece together how these sites functioned as self-contained defensive compounds.

The survival of the tower house itself, standing five storeys tall after centuries of Irish weather and historical upheaval, speaks to the quality of its construction and the importance it once held in the local landscape. Each floor would have served different purposes; typically storage and livestock at ground level, ascending through living quarters, private chambers, and finally to battlements at the top where defenders could survey approaching threats. Today, this silent sentinel continues to mark the Laois countryside, its stones holding stories of the families who once called it home.
