Standing on elevated ground with commanding views across the Tipperary countryside, the tower house at Kilcolman represents a fascinating glimpse into Ireland's turbulent past.

The Civil Survey of 1654-6 recorded it as a ‘castle with a Barbicon and five thacht Tennements’, owned by several Irish Catholic landowners including Mortagh O’Brien of Kilcolman and members of the O’Hogan family from nearby townlands. Today, what remains is an ivy-clad tower house rising four storeys high, constructed from roughly coursed sandstone rubble with a slight base batter that helped strengthen its defensive capabilities.

The structure, though missing its eastern wall, still impresses with its surviving northern, southern and western walls. Built into the northwest corner of what’s now a nineteenth-century courtyard, the tower shows evidence of its various incarnations through the centuries. The walls retain traces of rendering on the exterior and whitewash inside, whilst single-light windows with chamfered sandstone jambs pierce the north and south walls at ground level. Inside, you can spot the remnants of a barrel vault that once covered the second floor, along with joist holes indicating where wooden floors separated the other levels. According to the Ordnance Survey Letters, the tower once boasted its full height complete with a timber and slate roof, plus a wall-walk that featured machicolations; defensive openings through which defenders could drop objects on attackers below.

The site includes intriguing additional features that hint at its former importance. Possible bawn walls, which would have enclosed a defensive courtyard, attach to the southeast and northeast corners, though these have been altered during nineteenth-century renovations. Just north of the tower, a natural spring well known as ‘the Castle Well’ sits enclosed by drystone walls, providing a crucial water source that would have been essential during sieges. Various architectural modifications are visible throughout, including a blocked main doorway in the western wall and later insertions of both flat-headed and pointed doorways in the northern wall, showing how the building adapted to changing needs over the centuries.
