On the southeastern bank of the Ballyglass stream in Milltown, County Roscommon, the remains of a castle bawn tell a story of medieval fortification that never quite reached completion.

This wedge-shaped enclosure, measuring roughly 75 metres north to south and expanding from 30 metres wide at its northern end to 70 metres at the south, sits adjacent to the castle itself. Stone spreads and wall footings define most of its perimeter, with two towers still identifiable; one at the northwest corner and another at the centre of the southern wall. The eastern wall features an out-turned entrance with a 10-metre-long causeway, 3.5 metres wide, that would have provided access to this inner defensive area.

Beyond this inner bawn lies evidence of an ambitious but apparently unfinished outer ward. This larger, wedge-shaped space would have stretched approximately 90 metres east to west and 80 metres north to south, though much of it has since been removed. The southeastern and northeastern walls of this outer enclosure were less substantially built than the inner defences, backing directly onto the stream to the west. Two rectangular towers can still be traced in this outer ward; one along the southeastern wall and another at the eastern corner, suggesting this was intended as a serious defensive structure rather than a simple boundary.

Within the protected space of the inner bawn, archaeological survey has identified the footprints of four rectangular buildings. These structures would have served the daily needs of the castle’s inhabitants, perhaps functioning as storehouses, workshops, or accommodation for garrison and servants. The entire complex represents a significant medieval fortification that controlled this stretch of the Ballyglass stream, though the incomplete nature of the outer ward hints at changing fortunes or priorities that prevented its full realisation.
