Ballintogher Castle sits within a substantial square earthwork in Togherstown, County Westmeath, occupying the western quadrant of what appears to be an old bawn.

The site commands good views across the surrounding flat, poorly drained countryside, with Croughal church and graveyard visible just 500 metres to the southeast. Historical maps from 1838 show the castle as it once stood; a long rectangular structure aligned northwest to southeast, accompanied by an L-shaped building and several other structures, all connected by a roadway leading to the main road. The map labels this small settlement as ‘Boleyvillish’, with the castle itself marked as ‘Boleyvillish Castle in ruins’.

The earthwork surrounding the castle forms an impressive defensive feature, measuring approximately 75 metres from northwest to southeast and 73 metres from northeast to southwest. A scarp and wide water-filled moat define its boundaries, with a causewayed entrance on the southeastern side providing access. Whether this earthwork was built alongside the castle or relates to later buildings constructed after 1700 remains unclear. The interior space appears divided into quadrants, possibly indicating the presence of formal gardens, whilst cultivation ridges running east to south in the eastern section suggest agricultural use at some point in its history.

Archaeological surveys from 1978 paint a picture of a landscape shaped by centuries of use and adaptation. The earthwork is partially outlined by a stream on its northeastern side, with remnants of a wide, low bank and fosse visible along other sections. A second entrance near the western end of the northwestern side appears to be a later addition, perhaps connected to the 19th-century house that once stood northwest of the castle. The castle ruins themselves likely date from the 16th or 17th century, part of the Fitzgerald family’s holdings in the region. Today, the site remains in flat pastureland, characteristically rushy and poorly drained to the north and east, with slightly better drainage on the gently rising ground to the south and west.
