The site appears on historic Ordnance Survey maps from 1836 and 1908, marked in gothic lettering as ‘Ben’s Fort’, though its true origins remain something of a mystery. The main feature is a raised, grass-covered rectangular platform measuring 37 metres northeast to southwest and 25 metres northwest to southeast, surrounded by what was once a defensive moat or fosse.

The moat itself, which varies between 8 and 11 metres wide at the top, drops to about 1.2 metres deep on the interior side but only 0.2 metres on the exterior. Slight outer banks, roughly 6 metres wide and rising just 0.2 metres high, can still be traced along portions of the northeast and southwest sides at the southern end. At the western corner, there’s an intriguing raised platform, possibly natural, measuring 21 by 12 metres and standing 0.4 metres high.

Time hasn’t been entirely kind to Ben’s Fort; the moat has eroded away at the northern angle, where a grass-covered mound now sits, its 15-metre base tapering to a 3-metre summit some 1.7 metres high, likely formed from spoil heap. Whilst there are gaps in the earthwork at both ends of the northeast side and at the centre of the southeast side, archaeologists haven’t been able to identify which, if any, served as the original entrance. Despite its weathered state, this enigmatic earthwork continues to intrigue visitors and researchers alike, standing as a tangible link to Meath’s layered past.
