Just south of Blarney village, perched atop a limestone outcrop overlooking the confluence of the Martin and Blarney rivers, stands one of Ireland's most famous castles.

The complex consists primarily of a tower house and part of a bawn, with fragmentary remains of a later country house immediately east of the main structure. The tower house itself tells a fascinating story of medieval construction in two distinct phases: an original four-storey rectangular tower, later expanded with a grander five-storey L-shaped extension that transformed the building’s footprint and functionality.

The primary tower, measuring roughly 6.5 by 6.8 metres, features the classic defensive elements of a 15th-century Irish tower house. Its original entrance was likely in the east wall at ground level, though this has been obscured by later modifications including an inserted passage connecting to a spiral staircase in the northeast corner. Each floor was accessed via this staircase through pointed arch doorways, with windows strategically placed in the centre of most walls; their splayed and lintelled embrasures allowing defenders to survey the surrounding landscape whilst remaining protected. The third floor underwent significant alteration when it was converted to a kitchen, complete with two substantial fireplaces feeding into a wide chimney stack that dominates the western third of the tower at roof level.

The second tower, built as an ambitious extension, added considerable living space with its five main floors in the southern two-thirds and a complex arrangement of mural chambers, passageways and spiral stairs in the northern section. This later addition showcases more refined architectural details, including an entrance with a two-ordered pointed arch surround and a defensive yett-hole through the southern jamb. The upper floors feature numerous windows, many enlarged over time to accommodate wider rectangular lights divided by mullions, whilst the fourth floor retains its original square-set embrasures with pointed arches. The famous Blarney Stone forms part of the continuous machicolation that runs along the battlements, positioned as a lintel between corbels midway along the south wall; a rather unremarkable piece of masonry that has nonetheless achieved legendary status amongst visitors seeking the gift of eloquence.
