In the southwestern part of the Glen-columbkille valley floor, a curious stone enclosure sits atop a knoll of exposed rock.

The circular site, known locally as An Caiseal in the townland of Málainn Bhig, preserves the grassed-over remains of an ancient stone wall that once stood 1.8 metres wide. While much of the original structure has weathered away over the centuries, you can still spot the wall facings at various points around the perimeter, though a modern wall now runs along the entire eastern half, built directly on the old foundations.

At the heart of this enclosure lies an intriguing feature: a triangular outcrop of rock measuring roughly 95 centimetres on each side and rising 42 centimetres above ground level. Someone in the distant past took the time to carve a small depression into this stone, creating what archaeologists recognise as a bullaun stone. The hollow, measuring 20 by 17 centimetres and 8 centimetres deep, would have served a ritual or practical purpose for the site’s early inhabitants, possibly for grinding grain or holding holy water during the Christian period.

This site was documented during the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. Their work catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, helping preserve knowledge of sites like this one that might otherwise fade from memory. The combination of the stone enclosure and bullaun stone suggests this location held significance for the local community, whether as a secular farmstead, an early ecclesiastical site, or perhaps both at different periods in its long history.
