This modest boulder, measuring roughly 40 centimetres across, bears a carefully carved depression about 15 centimetres in diameter; a feature that earned it the local name ‘the hollow knee stone’, as recorded by researcher M. R. Colhoun. The stone now forms part of a field wall, having been incorporated into the boundary at some point in its long history.

Known as a bullaun stone, this artefact represents a type of ritual object found throughout Ireland, typically dating from the early Christian period onwards. Bullauns are characterised by their cup-like depressions, which were likely used for grinding grain, herbs, or other materials, though some may have held holy water or served other ceremonial purposes. The precise function of individual bullaun stones often remains uncertain, as they continued to be used and reused by local communities across many centuries, accumulating layers of folklore and tradition along the way.

This particular example was documented as part of the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, providing invaluable documentation of Donegal’s rich archaeological landscape. While the stone may appear unremarkable at first glance, it serves as a tangible link to the daily lives and spiritual practices of the people who once inhabited this rugged corner of Ireland.
