Bullaun stone, Shronahiree More, Co. Kerry

Just south of a ruined church doorway on the Iveragh Peninsula, a roughly shaped boulder sits quietly on the old foundations, its most telling feature a circular hollow worn into its upper surface.

This is a bullaun stone, a type of ancient carved or naturally hollowed rock found at early Christian and pre-Christian sites across Ireland, where the cup-shaped depressions are thought to have served ritual, votive, or practical purposes, though scholars continue to debate the full range of their uses. What makes the example at Shronahiree More quietly arresting is its precise relationship to the church entrance: positioned just beside the doorway, it occupies a threshold space that feels deliberate rather than accidental.

The boulder measures roughly half a metre across and thirty centimetres deep, with the circular depression in its top surface coming in at thirty centimetres in diameter and one centimetre deep. It rests on the foundations of the associated church, suggesting it has remained more or less in place even as the building around it fell away over time. A further detail connects the site to early industrial activity: a lump of iron slag was recovered from just west of the church in 1989 and is now held in the National Museum of Ireland. Iron slag is the glassy waste material left over from smelting, and its presence near an ecclesiastical site is a reminder that early medieval religious communities were often centres of craft production as well as worship. The find was documented in the archaeological survey of the Iveragh Peninsula compiled by Aidan O'Sullivan and John Sheehan, published by Cork University Press in 1996.
