The monolith, oriented northeast to southwest, overlooks the Glentogher river valley where the land slopes gently eastward. Local memory preserves an intriguing tale from the 1920s, when farmers reportedly removed several companion stones from the site and discovered what they described as ‘large bones’ beneath the earth; a tantalising hint at the monument’s possible role as an ancient burial marker.

The solitary stone represents just one fragment of what was likely a more extensive prehistoric monument. Whether it once formed part of a stone circle, alignment, or burial chamber remains uncertain, though the discovery of bones suggests mortuary practices may have taken place here thousands of years ago. Standing stones like this one dot the Irish landscape, serving various purposes for prehistoric communities; some marked territorial boundaries, others aligned with astronomical events, whilst many accompanied burial sites.

Today, sheep and cattle graze the surrounding fields much as they have for centuries, whilst the stone continues its silent vigil over the Glentogher valley. The monument was formally documented in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal in 1983, ensuring its significance is preserved for future generations even as the oral histories and physical remnants of its companion stones fade into memory.
