Burial ground, Garrylaurence, Co. Cork

At Garrylaurence in County Cork, a small triangular patch of ground carries a name that quietly announces what it is.

In Irish, An Faithchin means "The Little Green", and locally it was understood as an ancient cemetery, an untilled space that people left alone even as farmland pressed in around it. The 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map records it clearly, its roughly triangular outline marked by a broken line and bisected by a road running east to west.

When the antiquarian Power noted the site in 1918, the enclosing fence was still faintly traceable, a low boundary separating the burial ground from the surrounding fields. That boundary carried meaning. In rural Ireland, such informally marked cemeteries, sometimes associated with early Christian communities, sometimes simply with long local custom, were often respected precisely because no one was entirely sure of their age or their occupants. The ambiguity itself afforded a kind of protection. That protection, however, did not hold indefinitely. The field on the north side of the road was ploughed in relatively recent years, and according to local accounts, whatever surface irregularities remained, the slight rises and hollows that hint at graves beneath, were subsequently flattened out. What had survived as a legible, if fading, presence in the landscape was quietly erased.
