Burial ground, Spital, Co. Cork

There is nothing left to see at Spital, in north County Cork, and that absence is precisely what makes it worth knowing about.

A field on the eastern side of a road, beside a disused quarry, holds no grave markers, no inscriptions, no visible boundary. Local memory once placed four or five upstanding stones here, and the area retained the name "graveyard" among people who lived nearby, but the ground itself has long since closed over whatever lay beneath it.

The site is almost certainly connected to the leper hospital that once stood just to its north. Medieval leper hospitals, sometimes called spitals or spittles (the word survives in the placename here), were typically run by religious orders and placed at the edges of settlements, providing care and some degree of segregation for people with leprosy and other disfiguring conditions. A burial ground attached to such a hospital would have received the remains of its patients, people who in life were kept at a careful distance from ordinary parish cemeteries. When quarry workers broke the ground in 1932, bones were found close to the surface, recorded that year in the Ordnance Survey Field Memoranda. A further disturbance came around 1959 during road resurfacing, when more remains came to light. On that occasion, according to local information, the bones were gathered and reinterred at Buttevant Friary, a Franciscan foundation a short distance away, giving the displaced dead at least a named and consecrated resting place.

What the site offers now is essentially the landscape of an erasure: a quarry edge, a roadside verge, and the placename itself quietly preserving a record of what once stood here. The hospital, the patients, the grave markers remembered by older locals, and the bones twice disturbed by twentieth-century works have all, in different ways, disappeared. Spital remains as a name on the map, doing the work that nothing else has survived to do.
