Burnt mound, Ballydineen, Co. Cork

In a mixed forestry plantation in Ballydineen, Co. Cork, a low circular mound sits quietly among the trees, roughly ten metres across and half a metre high.

It looks, at first glance, like little more than a slight rise in the ground. Look closer and the material it is made from tells a different story: heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil, the accumulated debris of repeated, ancient fire-making.

This is a burnt mound, a type of prehistoric site found widely across Ireland and Britain. The working theory, broadly accepted among archaeologists, is that these mounds formed beside a trough or pit filled with water; stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into the water to bring it to the boil, a process repeated until the stones cracked and became useless and were discarded to the side. Over time, the rejected fragments built up into the low, spreading mounds we see today. Whether these sites were used for cooking, bathing, textile processing, or some combination of purposes is still debated. What is clear is that they represent sustained, repeated activity, the same task carried out again and again in the same spot over a considerable period. The Ballydineen example is circular, approximately ten metres north to south and ten metres east to west, and while only half a metre in height it covers a meaningful area of ground. Notably, it does not stand alone: a second burnt mound lies roughly a hundred metres to the south-west, suggesting this corner of Cork was a place of some regular prehistoric activity rather than a single isolated event.
