What remains today is merely the east-northeast corner of what was once a formidable tower house, its limestone walls rising approximately 3.5 metres from the ground. The surviving section measures 5 metres from north-northeast to south-southwest and 3.3 metres from west-northwest to east-southeast, constructed from roughly coursed limestone blocks with a rubble core that has weathered centuries of Mayo’s Atlantic climate.

The castle’s strategic position becomes clear when you consider its surroundings; the Addergoole River flows just 200 metres to the west, whilst an inlet of Lough Conn lies barely half a kilometre eastward. From its elevated vantage point, the tower house once commanded views over Addergoole church, a late medieval parish church that still stands on the lake shore some 750 metres to the north-northeast. This proximity suggests the castle and church formed part of an interconnected medieval landscape, likely sharing defensive and administrative functions for the local community.

Historical maps tell the story of the castle’s gradual decline. Both the 1838 and 1922 Ordnance Survey six-inch maps mark the site as ‘Castle in Ruins’, indicating it had already fallen into disrepair by the early 19th century. Today, whilst only a fragment of the original structure survives, these weathered walls continue to mark the landscape, a tangible reminder of the Anglo-Norman and Gaelic lordships that once controlled this corner of Mayo.
